Light Fixture Replacement Project
Objective: To remove an existing light fixture and install a new one in its place, ensuring the new fixture is properly connected, secure, and fully operational. The project will involve electrical work, so safety precautions must be strictly followed.
Location: The replacement will take place in a residential indoor setting, specifically in the living room, centered over the main seating area. The ceiling height is approximately 8 feet, providing easy access with a standard ladder.
Existing Fixture Details:
Type: Flush mount ceiling light
Dimensions: 12 inches in diameter, 6 inches in height
Material: Glass dome with a metal base
Electrical Specifications: The fixture is connected to a 120V household electrical circuit, controlled by a single wall switch.
New Fixture Specifications:
Type: Semi-flush mount LED light fixture
Dimensions: 18 inches in diameter, 10 inches in height
Material: Frosted glass with a brushed nickel finish
Electrical Specifications: Designed for 120V AC, equipped with integrated LED lights (no bulbs required), estimated 25,000 hours lifespan, dimmable when used with a compatible dimmer switch.
Weight: Approximately 10 lbs, ensuring compatibility with the existing electrical box and ceiling support.
Scope of Work:
Preparation: Turn off the power at the circuit breaker to ensure a safe working environment. Verify the power is off using a non-contact voltage tester.
Removal of the Old Fixture: Unscrew and carefully lower the existing fixture. Disconnect the wiring (hot, neutral, and ground wires).
Installation of the New Fixture:
Verify the electrical box in the ceiling is securely attached and can support the weight of the new fixture.
Connect the new fixture's wiring to the house wiring (color-coded connections: black to black, white to white, and green or bare copper to the ground screw).
Secure the new fixture to the ceiling according to the manufacturer's instructions, ensuring it is flush and stable.
Testing: Restore power at the circuit breaker. Turn on the switch to test the new fixture for functionality and dimming capabilities.
Cleanup: Dispose of or recycle the old fixture and clean the work area.
Safety Considerations:
Use a stable ladder or platform suitable for the ceiling height.
Wear safety glasses to protect against dust and debris.
Ensure all tools and materials are suitable for electrical work and are in good condition.
Tools and Materials Needed:
Non-contact voltage tester
Screwdrivers (Phillips and flat-head)
Wire strippers
Wire nuts
Electrical tape
Ladder
Safety glasses
Completion Time: The project is expected to take approximately 1-2 hours, depending on experience and the condition of the existing installation.
